| The abiotic conditions in a particular area are not constant. They vary, and this variation affects the distribution of living organisms. Zonation is the variation in the distribution of living organisms brought about by differences in environmental conditions. Good examples of zonation are provided by the distribution of seaweeds on a rocky shore and the effect of altitude on the distribution of mountain vegetation. The diagram below summarises the process of zonation on a rocky seashore. |
