National Nature Reserves
National Nature Reserves

These are smaller and more numerous than National Parks- in England, Scotland and Wales in 1999 there were in total about 333. In England alone in 1999 there were 200.
Thet are recognized specifically because of their importance in protecting biodiversity in Britain.

They have five functions:
  1. Conservation
  2. Research
  3. Demonstration and advice
  4. Education
  5. Amenity and success
National Nature Reserves receive strong protectionunder the law, but like SSSIs they are dependent on the landowner choosing to apply sensitive and appropriate management techniques.
